Lush life: enjoying silk velvet from the Riviera

The Italian craftsmanship sector, accounting for nearly 160 trades, represents an excellent driver of tourism development, as underlined by marketing expert Magda Antonioli Corigliano “an integrated system for destination offer, a perfect match of hospitality and fruition…”.
What several visitors are looking for is – firstly – authenticity, backed by hands on experiences, tastings, sensoriality. Specialty tour operators, in fact, concentrate on those areas (Langhe, Siena and its surroundings, Umbria, the Amalfi coast, Cinque Terre…) where tourism offer is combined with Made in Italy typical products.
Handicrafts is an umbrella term. Italy boasts more than 200 local traditions which – so to say - characterize territorial districts: to cite a few, wool in Biella, violins and lutes in Cremona, pottery in Faenza (RA) and Deruta (PG), marble in Carrara, furniture in Brianza, goldsmithing in Valenza (AL) and Vicenza, coral in Torre del Greco (NA), wood carving in the Alps, glass in Murano (VE), lace in Burano (VE), shoes in Vigevano (PV), filigree in Campo Ligure (GE)…

Liguria, a land of ancient Mediterranean spirit, exhibits lace, damask and macramè between the Tigullio gulf and the Val Fontanabuona, ceramics in Albisola, glass in Altare, silversmithing in Genova, slate in Val Fontanabuona and Valle Argentina, tower watches and bells in Avegno and Uscio, filigree in Campo Ligure, rissêu (cobblestone mosaic pavings) along the coast, gozzi and leudi (i.e. fishing and commercial boats) on both the ponente and levante riviere, paper manufacture in Mele…
These are immersions into artistry and traditions. As stated by figures, theme (and corporate) museums are mostly visited not only by tourists, but also by families, collectors, amateurs of material culture, researchers and schools – a multifaceted audience matching the offer of off-the-beaten-track areas.

Welcome to Liguria! This is the fascinating world of tastes and crafts that LiguriabyLuisa discloses to foreign markets and buyers.
